ASTRI and Baidu Apollo Collaborate to Promote the Implementation of C-V2X Technology in Hong Kong

[Hong Kong, May 25, 2023] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and Baidu Apollo today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly promote the implementation of autonomous driving and C-V2X technology in more scenarios in Hong Kong, as well as to explore cooperation opportunities in building High-Definition Maps (HD Maps), further enhancing Hong Kong’s smart mobility ecosystem.

Dr. Justin Chuang, Vice President, Communication Technologies, ASTRI and Mr Carson Wang, Head of Business Development, Baidu Apollo (Hong Kong) signed the agreement, witnessed by Mr. David Chan, Chief Operating Officer of ASTRI and Mr Alex Yang, Head of Baidu Apollo International.

Through this cooperation, ASTRI and Baidu Apollo will further expand the scenarios to implement C-V2X technology. Baidu Apollo will support ASTRI on the R&D of roadside infrastructure, deploying its Operating System of Intelligent Road Side (Smart Road Air OS) at Sha Tin Smart Mobility Public Testing Route. The collaboration leverages the strengths of Baidu Apollo in developing C-V2X infrastructure, autonomous driving software, and intelligent transportation operations, combining ASTRI’s R&D capability in 5G communication technology, AI, smart mobility C-V2X technology and experience in road tests, to accelerate the C-V2X technology deployment in different scenarios in Hong Kong. In response to Hong Kong’s unique urban environment, both parties will also explore cooperation opportunities in building HD Maps, enhancing the technology and usability of HD maps through experimental projects.

Mr. David Chan, Chief Operating Officer of ASTRI said, “With the establishment of the Smart Mobility (C-V2X) Technology Alliance in April this year, the collaboration with Baidu Apollo will promote in-depth exchanges and lead R&D breakthroughs in C-V2X, autonomous driving, and HD Map technologies between Hong Kong and the Mainland. We will increase more road test elements such as networks, software systems, intelligent roadside infrastructure, leveraging the strengths of both parties to support the implementation of smart mobility applications, so as the development of smart cities.”

Mr Alex Yang, Head of Baidu Apollo International is delighted to deepen the cooperation between Baidu Apollo and ASTRI to jointly promote the development of smart mobility in Hong Kong, ” Connected Network enable Intelligent Vehicle ” has become an industry consensus. Baidu Apollo has always been a practitioner of the idea of Cooperative Vehicle Infrastructure, committed to the high-quality integration and development among vehicles, roads, and cities, leading the transformation of future transportation. Taking this opportunity, Baidu Apollo will fully leverage its strengths with ASTRI to form an effective technology and product alliance, to create solutions for Cooperative Vehicle Infrastructure and support the development of smart cities in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.”

ASTRI has conducted the R&D of C-V2X technology since 2015. With the support from the Smart Transportation Fund of the Transport Department, ASTRI has launched one of the world’s largest C-V2X public road tests in Hong Kong in 2021, covering a 14km route from Hong Kong Science Park to Sha Tin town centre, to study and test the technology’s application scenarios on the roads of Hong Kong, as well as the network and infrastructure required. The second phase of C-V2X public road tests is currently underway, aiming to improve road and pedestrian safety and traffic efficiency with more efficient, accurate, and rapid information sharing by leveraging one of the ASTRI Hero Technology – high-speed, reliable, and low-latency 5G network solutions. Besides, the “Smart Mobility (C-V2X) Technology Alliance” was also established in April 2023, enhancing Hong Kong’s smart mobility ecosystem, facilitating more collaboration among government, industry, academia, and research on smart mobility and related technologies, in order to accelerate the implementation of C-V2X technology and infrastructure in Hong Kong, building Hong Kong as a model for smart cities.

Baidu, a leading AI company with a strong internet foundation, is a pilot unit for the state’s transportation. Baidu’s intelligent transportation business and its affiliated companies are committed to becoming pioneers in the modernization of China’s intelligent transportation, developing a world-class modern integrated transportation system in accordance with the high-quality requirements of “Safe, Convenient, Efficient, Green, Economical”, supporting the goal of “People’s Satisfaction, Strong Protection, and World-leading” for the transportation system. The Association for Operating System of Intelligent Road Side was officially established in Beijing on May 17 this year, rolling out the Operating System of Intelligent Road Side (Smart Road Air OS 1.0) to the industry. As a representative of the core technology contributors, Baidu will continue to uphold the principle of “Open Capabilities, Shared Resources, Accelerating Innovations, Sustainable Success”, promoting the development of smart transportation industry through this efficient, innovative, and mutually beneficial open-source association.
