With the acceleration of 5G commercialization and network densification due to higher carrier frequency, the deployment and operational cost of large-scale fibre backhaul becomes prohibitively high. On the other hand, wireless backhaul can enjoy low deployment cost and short time to market. 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) can enjoy strong interference rejection with beamforming, large data rate, ultra-low latency with lighter equipment. These advantages have made wireless backhaul commercially attractive. The wireless backhaul equipment market is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. In this project, we will enhance 5G base stations to support wireless backhaul commercialization with new features including over-the-air network synchronization, cell discovery in backhaul topology, enhancement on spectral efficiency and link establishment and routing mechanisms. A complete test infrastructure will be developed for system verification. Simulation results will also be provided to evaluate system performance which shall satisfy the requirements of 3GPP specifications.
