  • Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI was interviewed by RoadShow programme to introduce ASTRI’s technology projects of Indoor/outdoor Geographic Information System (GIS).

    To support the HKSAR Government strategy in transforming Hong Kong into a Smart City, ASTRI is working with the Energizing Kowloon East Office (EKEO) and Lands Department to develop the GIS and pilot smart parking and smart community in Kowloon East.

  • Fintech investments in Asia was quadrupled in 2015. With the rapid development of financial technology, consumer behavioral pattern has changed over time. Blockchain, smart contracts, and predictive analytics are among the financial service technologies transforming the ways transactions are conducted and customers are served. Against this backdrop, ASTRI is privileged to work closely with regulators, financial services companies and different business sectors to explore opportunities and develop solutions to serve consumers better.

    On 22 September, ASTRI was very delighted and honored to receive over 30 CIOs and Senior Executives from HSBC to discuss a number of transformational technologies that are applicable to banking sector. HSBC, as the leading global bank, is well-poised to capitalize on the next generation technology and innovation to deliver greater convenience for its customers. The Bank has established innovation hubs in London, Singapore and India. Now, the Bank specially gathered its great heads from different global functions at ASTRI not only to tour around the facility, but also dive deeper into various R&D initiatives of ASTRI.

    Chairman Mr. Wong Ming-yam, BBS, JP, Dr. Frank Tong, CEO and Dr. Duncan Wong, Vice-President, Financial Technologies of ASTRI warmly greeted the delegates. “We are honored to have this great opportunity to receive the experts from technology and innovation functions at HSBC. We believe the meeting would generate interesting insights into the applications of new technologies in banking industry,” said Chairman Wong.

    “New and evolving internet finance technologies are reshaping the financial industry across the globe. Hong Kong is Asia’s premier financial centre, the financial service industry here also sees the imminent need to embrace the fintech trend. Earlier, we collaborated with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to set up the “Fintech Innovation Hub”. In the future, we look forward to partnering with different financial institutions to develop proof of concept trials of products and services through the use of new technologies,” added Dr. Tong.

    Dr. Tong also gave an overview of ASTRI to the delegation and walked them through the several key areas of Fintech research ASTRI is focusing on, e.g. Cyber Security, Blockchain, Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, as well as Mobile Computing.

    Apart from learning the R&D directions and core competence of ASTRI, the delegates also viewed a number of FinTech-related demonstrations including ASTRI’s SecShare platform, big data analytics, facial recognition, blockchain and touch authentication, to name but a few.

    The delegates also toured around ASTRI’s laboratories such as ASTRI Cyber Range Laboratory.

    It was a fruitful visit that ASTRI and HSBC had a meaningful opportunity to exchange views on technologies and applications. The event concluded with cozy mingling and sharing.

    All my colleagues are impressed by the demos we saw.  I guess everybody loves the cyber security demos.  It is particularly important for HSBC as the security of information that our clients give us is critical.  Keeping it secured is one of our utmost objectives,” said Mr. Christopher Chazot, Global Head of Innovation of HSBC.

    ASTRI showcases Indoor & outdoor Geographic Information System at the APAC Innovation Summit 2016 Series – Smart City

  • ASTRI is one of the strategic partners of the “APAC Innovation Summit 2016 Series – Smart City” held on 22 -23 September 2016 at Hong Kong Science Park. On day 1 of the summit, ASTRI took part in the mini exhibition at the venue and showcased its self-developed project of Indoor & outdoor Geographic Information System.

    This system is an integrated seamless indoor and outdoor navigation system. It can cover both outdoor areas such as pedestrian’s pathways, alleys, bridges, as well as some indoor premises such as shopping malls. The system will also provide other services such as enquiry on nearby information and broadcast real time special notice. Underlying the system, ASTRI has developed a scalable cloud platform involving various kind of technologies such Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The system will be piloted in the Kowloon East.

    ASTRI and Nantong Industrial Technology Institute establish joint laboratory

  • [Hong Kong, 22 Sep 2016] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and Nantong Industrial Technology Institute (NTITI) announced today the establishment of the ASTRI – NTITI Joint Laboratory in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, focusing on the research and development of the next generation wireless network solutions.

    Dr. Justin Chuang, Vice President, Next Generation Network of ASTRI and Prof. Jianhua Lu, Honorary President of NTITI and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences officiated at the signing ceremony and signed the collaboration Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Witnessing the ceremony included Prof. Chen Xu, Associate Dean of NTITI, Prof. Ning Ge, Associate Dean of NTITI, Dr. Meikei Ieong, Chief Technology Officer of ASTRI, Mr. Bill Zhang, Senior Director (IC Design Analog), Dr. Eric Tsang, Director of ASTRI, representatives from Tsinghua University, Nantong University, NTITI and ASTRI.

    The establishment of the ASTRI – NTITI Joint Laboratory will strengthen in-depth collaborative research and provide highly competitive and innovative solutions for the next generation wireless network technologies.

    The joint laboratory will cover the following key R&D and commercialization areas:

    1. Large coverage wireless broadband and cooperative communications, focusing on satellite communications, offshore broadband services, as well as government and enterprise broadband private networks.
    2. Wireless multimedia communications focusing on mobile Internet and Multimedia Message Services (MMS).
    3. Internet of things (IoT), big data and artificial intelligence to build smarter cities, smarter healthcare, and intelligent transportation etc.

    Dr. Justin Chuang, Vice President, Next Generation Network of ASTRI said in his remark, “We are very excited to work closely with NTITI. The establishment of the joint lab will facilitate ASTRI and NTITI to promote R&D and new applications of the next-generation wireless network, including the next generation radio access and core network technologies for value creation.”

    Prof. Jianhua Lu, Honorary President of NTITI and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences said, “We are very pleased to collaborate with ASTRI. With the establishment of the joint laboratory, we can strengthen our collaboration in the applied research and jointly develop the next generation wireless network technologies such as coordinated satellite-terrestrial mobile networks, wide-area coverage broadband communications etc.”

    Delegates from Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, IVA visits ASTRI

  • 15 exclusively selected individuals from the IFG leadership development programme of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) visited ASTRI on 20 September 2016. According to Dr. Maria Dollhopf, the coordinator of the IFG leadership development programme, the purpose of this study trip is to offer the participants with deep insights into the entire ecosystem of R&D innovation in Hong Kong and Shenzhen as well as the R&D processes in different sectors and institutions.

    They understand that ASTRI is designated as the Hong Kong R&D Centre for Information and Communications Technologies with special goals to market leading-edge R&D for technology transfer to industry and to act as a focal point bringing together industry and university R&D assets to increase Hong Kong’s technological competitiveness. So, they are very interested in knowing more about how ASTRI, as a research institute, differentiates from the universities in Hong Kong and how ASTRI promotes industry and university partnerships in R&D initiatives.

  • Dr. Xiaohua Wu, Director, Multimedia Systems & Analytics and Dr. John Tsang, Senior Technical Manager of ASTRI were invited to attend the APEC Smart Healthcare Industrial Cooperation and Development Seminar Alongside Technology Promotion Meeting held on 19 September at Guangzhou, Guangdong Building.
