  • “The 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of Partner State Key Laboratories in Hong Kong cum Plaque Awarding Ceremony for Hong Kong Branches of the Chinese National Engineering Research Centres” was held on 6 December 2015 (Sunday) at Hong Kong Science Park. At the ceremony, the Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Minister of Science and Technology of the Central People’s Government, Professor Wan Gang, and the Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr. Nicholas W Yang, JP, delivered speeches at the ceremony. They recognised the leading positions of Partner State Key Laboratories (PSKLs) and the Hong Kong branches of the Chinese National Engineering Research Centres (CNERCs) in science and technology research. Professor Wan presented mementos to the 16 PSKLs and the first Hong Kong branch of the CNERCs. Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer received the memento on behalf of ASTRI.

    ASTRI and SAE jointly establish research and development centre

  • [Hong Kong, 4 December 2015] Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and SAE Magnetics (Hong Kong) Limited (SAE) announced today (4 December) to jointly establish the ASTRI-SAE Joint R&D Centre, focusing on group-wide R & D innovation activities, with smart factory being the first chapter of the cooperation.

    At the signing ceremony, Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ASTRI and Dr. Stanley Hao, Senior Vice-President of SAE signed the agreement under the witness of Mr. Vincent Tang, Assistant Commissioner for Innovation and Technology (Infrastructure and Quality Services) of HKSAR Government and Mr. Ming-yam Wong, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ASTRI and Dr. Hong Tian, Chairman and CEO of SAE.

    The “ASTRI-SAE Joint R&D Centre” is set up with 3 missions:

    1. To facilitate an integrated and professional strategic partnership development
    2. To strengthen collaborative research among ASTRI and SAE and other leading research institutions in the world
    3. To make it as a hub for research collaboration, talent cultivation and technological entrepreneurship

    Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Ming-yam Wong of ASTRI said, “The Centre will boost factory efficiency by offering intelligent innovation solutions.  Most important of all, it will further strengthen the long-standing tie between ASTRI and SAE and together, we would move ahead to contribute our efforts in the re-industrialization of Hong Kong.”

    Dr. Hong Tian, Chairman and CEO of SAE, said, “SAE is delighted to see the establishment of the joint R & D Centre, which will serve as a great platform for SAE to leverage on ASTRI’s R & D strengths to expand the scope of technology applications of the company.”

    In his congratulatory remarks, Mr. Vincent Tang, Assistant Commissioner for Innovation and Technology said, “I am happy to see the R & D partnership between ASTRI and SAE Magnetics (Hong Kong) Limited on advanced technology in smart factory that would facilitate the adoption of technology in Hong Kong business applications, and enhance the opportunity for developing R & D talents for Hong Kong.”

    It is expected that the Centre will create tremendous values to both companies in terms of wider application of technologies in smart factory such as robotic navigation, model-based computation and factory big data analytics.

    ASTRI signs Memorandums of Understanding with Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation (BICI)

  • The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has strengthened its collaboration with Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation (BICI) to jointly establish FinTech Collaborative Innovation Centre and develop research projects on  IoT for Smart City.  Dean of BICI together with Beijing Haidian district government officials also paid a visit to ASTRI to learn about its latest technologies development.

    On 28 November (Sat), Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI and Dr. Duoxiang Wang, Dean of BICI signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the establishment of FinTech Collaborative Innovation Centre (the Centre) at the section entitled “Collaboration Between Beijing and Hong Kong to Accelerate Establishment of National Wide Collaborative Innovation Centres in Beijing” organised by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, which was one of the programme of the 19th Beijing – Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre . The Centre will facilitate the development of research projects in the areas of financial technology, big data and mobile software platform.  At the same Symposium, Dr. Tong also signed another MoU with BICI on the cooperation of IoT for Smart City during the “Outline of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Co-ordinated Development” section.

    On 29 November (Sun), Dr. Duoxiang Wang, Dean of BICI and a group of Beijing Haidian District Government officials including Ms. Aoshuang Yan, Director of Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission and Mr. Yu Jun, Acting District Chief of Beijing Haidian District paid a visit to ASTRI Security Lab.

    ASTRI Signs MOU with Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation (BICI) on Establishing Joint Research Centres and Institute of Collaborative Innovation

  • [Hong Kong, 30 November 2015] The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 28 November with Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation (BICI) to establish FinTech Collaborative Innovation Centre, to develop research projects in the areas of financial technology, big data and mobile software platform.

    Under the MoU, both parties will strengthen collaborations in financial technology and setting up of joint research centres and institute of collaborative innovation, thereby facilitating the development of innovation and technology, as well as technology transfer. This will also help promote joint research and development, sharing of information and technologies, and exchange and nurturing talents between Hong Kong and Beijing.

    The MoU was signed by Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI and Dr. Duoxiang Wang, Dean of BICI at the 19th Beijing – Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Dr. Tong then briefed the attendees on the research and development of ASTRI.

    ASTRI has been closely working with different corporations and research institutions to develop strategic emerging industries. Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI remarked that by signing the MoU with BICI, ASTRI can leverage its advantages on financial technology to strengthen the collaborations, and make substantial contributions to the economic, research and technologies developments in Hong Kong and the region.

  • ASTRI’s Member of the Board of Directors, and co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Sengital Ltd, Dr. Alan Lam was recently selected as one of the awardees of the “JCI Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) Selection for his significant accomplishments and contributions to the industry as an innovation and technology entrepreneur. Organized by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Hong Kong, the award aims to recognize youths with outstanding achievement in their career and community services and to inspire other youths and public to excel .

    ASTRI technology leader wins HKCS Outstanding ICT Achiever Awards 2015

  • Dr. Vincent Lau, R&D Director (Software and System) of ASTRI, was awarded the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) Outstanding ICT Achiever Awards 2015: Consulting Category. An award presentation ceremony was held at the HKCS 45th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 25 November 2015.

    Dr. Vincent Lau has been working in the innovation technology industry for over 20 years, focusing on product creation and business development. He had worked in both local and multi-national companies on various project development. He has been offering consultancy service to a number of private companies, NGOs and government departments on technology application for value creation. His projects include government projects, ICT education projects, smart toys, location-based system for blind, and app-based training system for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children, to name but a few. He continues developing various technology projects on smart living to improve people’s quality of life.

    Launched by HKCS, the awards aims to recognising and honour the significant contributions of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) professionals in the Hong Kong’s ICT industry. The assessment criteria include leadership, customer’s needs and concerns, means and approaches, key success factors and project benefits.

    ASTRI and Infineon sign an agreement in “System Thermal Management Solutions for High Power Module” to Enhance System Performance and Energy Efficiency in High Power Density Applications

  • Solutions will be tailored to the requirements of the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong markets

    [Hong Kong, 26 November 2015]  Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited (ASTRI) and Infineon Technologies Hong Kong Limited (Infineon) announced jointly today their signing of a contract service (agreement) in “System Thermal Management Solutions for High Power Module”. ASTRI and Infineon will develop thermal management solutions for high power density applications tailored to the local requirements of the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong markets.

    The strategic collaboration will initially leverage on the research, design, package and testing R&D capabilities in ASTRI, and the product to system know-how of Infineon to develop effective thermal management solutions supporting applications across different industries, such as telecommunications, Low-voltage motor drive, energy storage system and solar conversion. The collaboration aims to provide a one-stop solution and shorter time to market to customers in the telecom and motor drive industries.

    The agreement was signed by Dr. Frank Tong, Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI, and Mr. Calvin Leung, Managing Director of Infineon Technologies Hong Kong Limited.

    The global power semiconductor market will reach a total market value of just under €15.6 billion in 2018, according to IHS Technology – Power Semiconductor Discretes and Modules Report 2014. Major growth is expected in power discretes for cellular Infrastructure and cellular headset with a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.9 percent expected.

    The agreement is an initial attempt by ASTRI and Infineon to consolidate efforts and utilize the strengths of both parties to develop thermal management solutions for high power density applications especially for the mainland and Hong Kong markets.  The partnership has the potential of further expanding into other power management and multi-market products and solutions in the future.

    ASTRI Hosts Industry and University Collaboration Forum 2015 to Share Latest Technological Research and Development and Facilitate Collaboration

  • [Hong Kong, 18 November 2015] With staunch support from Innovation and Technology Commission and 54 supporting organizations, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Institute (ASTRI) hosted its annual signature event – Industry and University Collaboration Forum 2015 at Grand Hall, Phase 3 of Science Park today.  The Forum received an overwhelming response with over 400 participants from various sectors and universities.

    The Forum was kicked off with an opening ceremony officiated by the Hon. Mr. Nicholas Yang, JP, Advisor to the Chief Executive on Innovation and Technology cum Member of the Executive Council, HKSARG, Ms. Annie Choi, JP, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr. Zhi-ming Liu, Deputy Inspector, Department of Educational, Scientific Technological Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR, Mr. Ming-yam Wong, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ASTRI and Dr. Frank Tong Chief Executive Officer of ASTRI.

    In his welcoming remarks, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ASTRI Mr. Ming-yam Wong, BBS, JP said that he was very delighted to see the establishment of the Innovation and Technology Bureau.  He believed that the implementation of China’s 13th 5-Year Plan and the One Belt One Road initiative would bring about tremendous demand for advanced technologies.  By working together, both ASTRI and its strategic partners would be able to seize the opportunities to unleash the power of innovation and technology.

    Advisor to the Chief Executive on Innovation and Technology cum Member of the Executive Council, HKSARG Mr. Nicholas Yang, JP said in his opening remarks, “Innovation is about the ability to embrace failure and wait for success. It is also about achieving collective excellence and shared values and doing good to society. In order to elevate ourselves and stay one step ahead of competition, we have to transform Hong Kong from service economy to knowledge-based economy through innovation and technology.”

    At the panel discussion facilitated by ASTRI’s Chief Marketing Officer Dr. Jack Lau, five distinguished panelists including Ms. Cally Chan, Managing Director, HPE Hong Kong, Mr. Francis Chan, CCB Senior Superintendent (Technology Crime & Intelligence), Hong Kong Police Force, Ms. Winnie Ho, Deputy Head, Energizing Kowloon East Office, Mr. Josiah Lam, Senior Manager of Financial Infrastructure Development Division, Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Dr. Enboa Wu, Associate Vice-President for Knowledge Transfer, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, shared their insights on various topics including commercial opportunities through collaboration, cyberspace security, development of smart cities, latest cyber monetary systems and the values of knowledge transfer from universities.

    The Forum also kept audience abreast of ASTRI’s technological development and application in four areas, namely Financial Technologies, Intelligent Manufacturing, Next Generation Network and Medical and Health as well as that of the National Engineering Research Centre for Application Specific Integrated Circuit System (Hong Kong Branch) in the themed talks by different R & D experts of ASTRI.

    Another highlight of the Forum was the exhibition which showcased and demonstrated the latest technologies including Intelligent Head Up Display and Mobile Heart Health Monitoring System, to name but a few.  Fellows of the inaugural ASTRI Innovation Runway (AIR programme), which aims at providing comprehensive pre-incubation support to young entrepreneurs also displayed their innovative projects at the Forum.
